Subject: Self Introduction

Dear Brad,

I am Pei Ling, a second-year student from the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) pursing a bachelor in hospitality business (HB). To introduce myself, I graduated from Temasek Polytechnic with a diploma in integrated facilities management. My passion for the hospitality industry started when I was attached to a local events management company for my student internship program in polytechnic. I was given the opportunity to liaise with suppliers and vendors extensively. In the process, this has honed my communication and interpersonal skills.

After I graduated from polytechnic, I took a gap year and worked full time in a small events management company where I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to liaise and work with various agencies in the government and private sector. My job responsibilities includes planning, conceptualising and coordinating onsite execution to ensure smooth delivery of events. Furthermore, I was expected to deal with unforeseen circumstances during events such as last minute changes and changes in clients’ requirements. Such exposure has given me insights into the events management industry and trained me to work well under pressure. Through my work experience, I have also learnt to become adaptable when dealing with tough situations.

Regarding my hobbies, I am a dreamer who loves to travel and experience the culture of different countries. Travelling also allows me to expand my horizons and gain more knowledge. The picturesque landscape in different places makes each country a unique and charming scene. I have travelled mostly to asian countries due to the lack of funds currently. However, I would love to travel to other parts of the world such as US and Europe when I have the chance to.

I believe one of my strengths in communication is being a good listener and attention to details. Through this course, I would like to improve my writing and communication skills as I believe these are vital in liaising and communicating with my colleagues and clients in future. I would also like to learn how to create good relationships with customers through professional engagement. One of my weaknesses is not being able to speak and present to large groups with much confidence. Hence, I hope I would be able to raise my confidence level in presenting and communicating to others to allow them to feel at ease around me.

I hope this allows you to understand more about me. Thank you!

Best regards,
Pei Ling

  1. Dear Peiling,

Thank you for the self introduction email! It was nice to learn more about your passion for travelling.

I have point out some possible mistakes as listed below:

    1. "Furthermore, I was also expected to deal with unforeseen circumstances during events such as last minute changes and changes in clients’ requirements."

    - 'Furthermore' and 'also' have the same meaning. You can remove either one.

    2. "I have travelled mostly to asian countries due to the lack of funds now but I would love to travel to other parts of the world such as US and Europe when I have the chance to."

    - This sentence seems long and rephrased to two sentences.
    - "I have travelled mostly to only Asian countries due to the lack of funds at the moment. However I would love to travel to other parts of the world such as US and Europe when I have the chance to."

    3. " One of my weakness is not being......"

    - 'Weakness' is singular. In this context, it should be plural (weaknesses).

Please correct me if I am wrong!

    Thank you Peiling.

  2. Welcome to the hospitality industry, Pei Ling! I am very happy that you have gained interest in hospitality industry during your internship at an events management company. Personally, I have a deep passion for this industry since my internship during polytechnic at Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel under the housekeeping department.

What makes you want to continue pursuing your studies as you already have a job at a place you enjoy working? I hope we can exchange our insights in the hospitality industry because I have never worked in an events management company.

In terms of communication skills, attention to details may be one of my weakness as I always see things in a big picture. You mentioned that you are not able to present to large groups with confidence which is one of my strength. As I have many opportunities while working in the service industry for several years. I hope we can learn from each other through this module.

Hope to hear from you soon!

    1. Thank you for your comment, Xenia! I would like to further pursue my studies as I wanted to gain more in depth knowledge about the hospitality industry. I was not from a similar course in polytechnic and I hope that studying would allow me to know more about the events industry as well as hotels and hospitality as a whole.

I would say that working in an events management company is tiring when an event is approaching and there are many things to prepare. However, I feel that this is something I look forward to as the satisfaction I get from completing a successful event is worth it. Hopefully, we can exchange our insights in class and learn more from each other, thank you!

  3. Dear Pei Ling,

This is a highly informative letter. I really appreciate how you have not just covered the scope of the assignment but also provided concrete supporting details tying your experience with the motivation for your current career focus. I can also appreciate you mentioning a love of travel. I'm just curious about where you have gone to date and what your impression of that place was.

For your strengths and weaknesses in communicating, you have provided quite a bit of detail and woven this together with your goals for the module. In terms of your written communication, I see lots of strengths in this letter, but you might consider these areas as well:

    1. verb issues
-- My job responsibilities include > (tense) ?
-- Through my work experience, I have also learn to become > (verb form) ?
-- The picturesque landscape in different places make > (subject-verb agreement) ?

    2. minor editing
-- One of my weakness > One of my weaknesses
    -- one of my strength > ?
-- I hope this allows you to understand more about me, thank you! > I hope this allows you to understand more about me. Thank you!

I look forward to getting to know you better as the term progresses.

    Cheers,

    Brad

    2. Thank you for your comment and the feedback about my post, Brad! I will amend it accordingly.

Regarding my love for travel, I have gone to mostly Asian countries such as Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, China and Indonesia. I would love to travel to further countries such as Perth, Sydney and Paris in future. My impression of each country varies but Taiwan has left the most lasting impression on me. The people there are very kind and I like the warm and relaxing culture. With that, I hope this allows you to know a little more about me!
